This past couple of weeks have been the most challenging by far since I got here. I think the most difficult is learning to live in a new place where everything is different from what I am used to. Though I was born in Honduras and I've been living in the United States for the past 16 years I am used to so many things. The conveniences and comforts of living in the U.S. are so evident since I moved here. It would be different if I just came to visit, but learning how to live here for a while, its a different game.
I moved to Uruguay, without a job, residency or super close relationships. The beginning was exciting; traveling to a new country and living in a new place. But now, the reality is sinking in and the challenges are evident. This past month, a ministry couple from the U.S. came to visit Uruguay and share their experience being in a mission team. It was overwhelming and intimidating. Though our church is so small, I feel that this is where I can be better used and make a difference with my life. Sometimes the hardest things are where I am the most excited about God.
We had a great church service in the rooftop of one of the sisters’ apartment building. It was good to have a few friends visit, hear the gospel and see our community. Our church group is very diverse. Uruguay is expensive and most of us are using our savings and living day by day. God has truly called each of us to live by faith and trust on his provision and power. It is a scary, but excited way to live in Jesus Christ.
One of the things I am learning to appreciate are the relationships in our singles group. God has provided just what I need, with singles Christians with the same desire to please God. We have grown so much closer and in our desire to see God’s plan for us here. I have learned to appreciate the men and women in this team because of God, even though we are imperfect and have different personalities.
I moved this past week to a part of town that is a little bit out from the center of the city, but it is close to the beach/river. I am able to go almost everyday to praise God and his creation. I don’t consider myself to be a beach person, but walking everyday by the beach to pray has been really amazing. Every morning, I am captivated by the view. Since is winter here few people go to the beach, so I have it to myself.
This past year, Argentina won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It was one of the most exciting world cups I have witnessed. A country in Latin America winning the World Cup along with like Lionel Messi was such a joy. We had the privilege to visit Argentina for the first time. We took a bus and a boat before we arrived to Buenos Aires. The trip took about 3 hours from Montevideo. BA is a large city with so much to experience and see. Our weekend trip was really exciting and encouraging, yet very short.
On our way back from Buenos Aires, we visited Colonia del Sacramento. One of my favorite places in Uruguay.
I ask for your prayers for me. This is a very difficult time for me personally and many mixed feelings come and go. Pray for peace and to be able to fulfill the purpose for my life and bring glory to Christ. Also pray to find a job and new relationship connections.
Always,
Ed Mejia
